We live in an age of DLC. Additional digital content is now a part of every almost every AAA game’s infrastructure, ensuring that they are built upon continuously after release.

Every game is now a potential platform for more content that is being developed as soon as, or even in some cases, before a game hits stores. This is in addition to console exclusives such as skins or extra missions coming with either a PlayStation, Xbox or another platform.

While some DLC is certainly worthwhile, extending a story in a meaningful way or offering a crazy new game type, it certainly can be done horribly as well. Nowadays it seems almost foreign for a mass of fans to get bent out of shape over a $3 character armor but back in 2006 the community was outraged to find that for a few dollars players could buy new horse armors to decorate their steeds in Oblivion. This led to a fan backlash that continues to exist to this day as an offhand joke.

In what would be a similar move, it has been hinted that Call of Duty: Ghosts’ multiplayer will be getting a skin for the guard dog perk, changing the companion from a dog to a wolf. A Reddit (via MP1st) user under the pseudonym beta_crater posted a photo of the skin. They said that the DLC would be hitting the Xbox 360 and “probably XB1″ on December 12th. At least in retail shops, the user said it would be between $1-$4 ($3 in their own area) depending on tax.

It is worth noting this hasn’t yet been announced by Activision, so take this all with a grain of salt. It could just be a minor hoax being pulled or it could be time for Call of Duty players to get ready to get their wolf on.

If this does in fact turn out to be true, it should be an interesting measuring stick showing how the community has evolved over time. The gaming industry is now built upon digital add-ons and DLCs so a buyable but cheap skin may end up going completely under the radar. If that happens, we will be able to see how opinions have changed in a post-horse armor world.

With so many more egregious offenses against customer’s wallets of late in the form of extravagant microtransactions, perhaps it is worth letting a cheap DLC reskinning of a dog slidw. For something that is so cheap and optional, it seems like a fairly innocuous piece of fluff.

But please, let us know what you think in the comments.
