Battlefield 4: China Rising banned in China

The latest expansion to Electronics Arts' Battlefield 4 was banned in China.

The game's China Rising DLC tells the story of Admiral Chang, a military leader who begins a coup against the Chinese government and attacks the United States in the process.

According to The Wall Street Journal, an copy of the official ban wasn't available, but translated blogs indicated the DLC was banned on grounds of national security and due to perceived aggression against the Chinese culture. The government ordered the removal of the game from store shelves and citizens to uninstall the game from hard drives.

EA doesn't offer Battlefield games in China. It offers a version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 and other titles, but the China Rising DLC wouldn't have come to the country regardless.

China banned video game consoles over a decade ago due to concern they may have over children. According to the Wall Street Journal, the government began loosening console restrictions over the past few years, but interested parties still often turn to importers and private retail outlets to obtain gaming consoles.

EA is no stranger to controversy surrounding its games. Two years ago, Battlefield 3 sparked complaints because it was set in Tehran. The company also came under fire when Taliban fighters were included in Medal of Honor.

China Rising takes place on mainland China and features four new maps, new vehicles and new equipment.
